All steps to meet energy needs, says Musharraf

MIANWALI: President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday said that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear power stressing that it is being run in a highly professional and motivated manner.

President Pervez Musharraf expressed these views during his visit to Pakistan's second nuclear power plant at Chashma while addressing a ceremony. The "Chashma Nuclear Power Plant" has been designed and built in collaboration with People's Republic of China, and is being operated and maintained by Pakistani scientists and engineers, delivering full power of 300 mw to the national grid since September 15, 2000, and would be completed by 2010. President Pervez Musharraf said that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear power urging the nuclear assets are in safe hands. He said that Pakistan's command and control structure was extremely strong, and made it clear that there was no chance whatsoever that the nuclear assets would ever fall in wrong hands. He said that the government was taking utmost measures to fulfil energy needs of the county stressing that comprehensive planning is underway in this regard. He said that energy is need of the hour and as country is developing, need is increasing to a great extent.

With worldwide reserves of fossil energy resources approaching their limits it is essential for Pakistan to pursue a sustainable programme for development of self-reliance in energy production, he maintained. He said that Pakistan was grateful to China for its technical cooperation for the power plant.

He said that the power plant is a focal point of Pak-China friendship adding that Pak-China friendship has no boundaries adding that both shares good relations in the fields of common interest like energy, defence, trade and others.

He said that Pak-China friendship is flourishing with each day passing. Representatives of Chinese engineers also spoke on the occasion. Later, president visited the entire site.
