VICTORIA, Texas — Exelon Nuclear said Tuesday it has chosen a site south of Victoria for a proposed nuclear power plant.

The company announced its plans to seek a license to build and operate a plant on an 11,000-acre tract of land about 20 miles south of Victoria in Victoria County.

The Illinois-based company previously had identified a site in Matagorda County as its primary prospective site.

The company expects to spend $23 million on the application process. It has not committed to building the plant, but just to seek a license.

Texas is home to two nuclear power plants. The South Texas Project near Bay City is operated by a consortium of energy companies. The other existing plant is Comanche Creek, about 80 miles southwest of Dallas.
